HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive, energy-based treatment that targets the deep structural layers of the skin—including the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System), which is the exact same tissue layer tightened during a surgical facelift. Often marketed under brand names like Ultherapy or Ultraformer, HIFU is one of the most powerful non-surgical lifting treatments available.
Unlike lasers that penetrate the skin from the outside in, HIFU bypasses the surface of the skin entirely. The device delivers precise, focused ultrasound energy at specific depths (typically 1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm). This energy rapidly heats the targeted tissue to around 60-70°C, creating micro-coagulation zones.
This targeted thermal trauma triggers a robust natural healing response. The body immediately begins to contract the tissue (causing an initial lifting effect) and ramps up the production of fresh, new collagen and elastin to repair the area over the following months.
HIFU is primarily used for lifting and tightening rather than volumizing. Key treatment areas include:
A typical HIFU session takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the area being treated. As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, which can feel like a prickly heat or deep ache. Pain management (such as strong topical numbing cream or oral analgesics) is often required, as medical-grade HIFU can be uncomfortable.
One of the main advantages of HIFU is that there is virtually no downtime. You may experience some mild redness, slight swelling, or tenderness to the touch for a few days, but you can return to normal activities immediately.
While you may notice a slight tightening immediately post-treatment, the real results develop gradually over 2 to 3 months as new collagen is synthesized. Results typically last 12 to 18 months, at which point a maintenance treatment is recommended.
