Sculptra is an injectable bio-stimulator made from Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA). Unlike traditional dermal fillers (like Juvederm or Restylane) which use hyaluronic acid to immediately add volume, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your body's own immune system to produce new collagen. It is often referred to as a "liquid facelift" because it restores the underlying structural foundation of the face rather than just filling individual wrinkles.
When injected deep into the dermis or subcutaneously, the PLLA microparticles cause a controlled, mild inflammatory response. Your body recognizes these particles and sends fibroblasts to the area, which begin producing dense Type I collagen around them. Over the course of a few months, the PLLA particles are safely metabolized into water and carbon dioxide and eliminated, leaving behind a robust network of your own natural collagen.
Sculptra is ideal for addressing global volume loss and significant skin laxity. It is not used for fine lines or lip augmentation. Common treatment areas include:
Sculptra requires a series of treatments for optimal results. A general rule of thumb is one vial per decade of life (e.g., a 40-year-old might need 4 vials), spaced out over 2 to 3 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. The injections are mixed with lidocaine for comfort.
Immediately after the procedure, you will look fuller due to the sterile water used to mix the product. This water absorbs within 24-48 hours, and you will return to your baseline appearance. The true results (the new collagen) will slowly become visible over 2 to 3 months.
Post-treatment massage is critical with Sculptra to ensure the product is evenly distributed and to prevent the formation of nodules (small lumps under the skin). Patients must adhere to the "5-5-5 Rule": massage the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days.
